Marie Stopes International Australia has partnered with WaterAid Australia on an innovative new project, tackling important areas of adolescent girls’ health.
In many developing countries, adolescent pregnancy and menstruation are major factors in girls' poor school attendance. More alarmingly, teenage pregnancy is a leading cause of death and disability for girls aged 15-19.
In Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste we have partnered with WaterAid Australia to tackle reproductive health and menstrual hygiene simultaneously. This integrative approach is one of the first of its kind in the region, offering a holistic solution to improving girls' health and education.
Sexual and reproductive health services - including family planning - and menstrual health education will be provided to adolescent girls and boys, as well as adult community members. There will also be facility upgrades in rural and urban schools in Timor Leste and PNG, to ensure school toilets are better equipped and more discrete for girls who are menstruating.
