MSI statement on the $9.7 million of USAID contraceptive supplies

Beth Schlachter, MSI’s Senior Director for US External Relations, said:

“Yesterday in the New York Times, we issued a statement in good faith commenting on news that nearly $10 million of pills, intrauterine devices and hormonal implants had been destroyed by the U.S. government. It now appears that the information given to the New York Times by the State Department was incorrect and the stockpile of contraception is still in Belgium.

“We stand by our earlier statement that if this contraception is destroyed under the blatantly false pretense that they are abortifacients, it would be an outrageous act of cruelty. It would cost lives, derail progress in global health, and strip millions of people of the basic tools they need to plan their families and protect their health.”


This statement was updated at 18:00BST on 12.09.2025 to reflect new reporting from the New York Times.
