Boost your donation with Gift Aid

Help support choice around the world

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a simple way to make your donations go further. Signing a Gift Aid Declaration allows MSI to reclaim an extra 25% of your donation from HMRC, meaning your gift will have a greater impact at no extra cost to you.

For example, with Gift Aid, a £10 donation will now be worth £12.50 and a £50 will be worth £62.50

If you have made a donation in the past four years and would like to add Gift Aid to your donation or need to update your contact details, please complete the below declaration:

How do I know if my donations qualify for Gift Aid?

To qualify for Gift Aid, you must be a UK taxpayer and have paid sufficient Income or Capital Gains Tax in the same financial year. For example, if you donate £100 then you must have paid £25 in Income or Capital Gains Tax in the same financial year.

You pay Income or Capital Gain Taxes if Income Tax is taken from your wages or salary before you receive your pay or you pay tax after filling in a self-assessment form.

You will also pay these taxes on taxable savings, a pension plan or investment income as well as on the sale of a property or some shares.

Please note, Inheritance Tax, Council Tax and VAT do not qualify towards Gift Aid.

How does it work if I am a higher rate tax payer?

As a higher rate taxpayer, you can claim a rebate based on the difference between the higher rate and basic rate by declaring charitable donations on your self-assessment form. MSI can only claim back at the basic rate on your donations, but you will still increase the impact of your gift.

How does it work if I am a lower rate tax payer?

If you pay a lower rate (10% or 20%), we can still claim back 25p for each £1 you donate, as long as you pay enough tax to cover the claim in the tax year you make the donation.

How does it work if I make my donation via CAF (Charities Aid Foundation)?

If you make donations via CAF, tax has already been reclaimed, but please do complete the Gift Aid declaration above to cover any additional donations you have made in the past or may make in the future outside of CAF.

How long does the Gift Aid declaration last?

After you sign a Gift Aid declaration with us, it covers your past, present and future donations. We can back-claim four years and we’ll continue to claim Gift Aid on any donations you make unless you ask us not to. Please do get in touch at [email protected] if your details or Gift Aid status changes.
