Your body, your choice, your future

By 2030, no abortion will be unsafe and every individual who wants access to contraception will have it.

MSI’s vision

We’re striving to ensure everyone is supported to make decisions about their bodies and their futures. This can be achieved with the right partnerships, funding, policies and political prioritisation. So, alongside providing services, this is where MSI’s focus is.

Our new strategy brings to life our bold vision, how we will get there, and what we’re committed to achieving for women and girls. It commits us to being a good partner, to confronting the challenges we face with courage and innovation, and to closing the gap — once and for all — so that everyone is only one contact or one hour away from accessing safe reproductive healthcare.

“Reproductive choice is a key pillar in the drive for gender equality and a future where women and girls take their rightful place in all aspects of society. We invite you to join us in making this future a reality.”

Simon Cooke, CEO of MSI Reproductive Choices

We will deliver reproductive choice to millions more during this decade

As this decade continues to present us with many challenges and uncertainties, what we can be sure of is that the need for reproductive healthcare and rights will remain universal and urgent.

Today, there are over 257 million women and girls across the world who want access to contraception but don’t have it. Unsafe abortion is a public health crisis. Over 9 million women and girls will face injuries this year from a lack of access to safe abortion care. An estimated 22,000 women will die.

A lack of access to reproductive healthcare not only denies women autonomy over their bodies, it also restricts their opportunities to pursue education, forge careers and contribute to building a better world. In Niger, half of all girls give birth before their 18th birthday, while only 1 in 100 will finish secondary education.

Enough is enough. Everyone should have reproductive choices to make decisions about their bodies and futures.

At MSI, we are proud of the impact we’ve made so far, providing reproductive choice and healthcare to over 200 million women worldwide since we began in 1976. But our job is far from done.

Our commitment to choice

With access to high-quality contraception and abortion services, no one would need to risk their health or their life to determine their own future.

By enabling girls to stay in school, supporting women to pursue careers, and better equipping communities to be resilient in the face of global challenges like the climate crisis, reproductive choice is foundational to building a better, more sustainable world for all.

As Damaless, a nurse from our Zambia programme, shared:

“If you empower a woman or a girl, then you’ve empowered a home, you’ve empowered a country and you’ve empowered the world.”

Meet our providers

Our approach: 6 pillars for delivering choice

Leave no one behind

We will reach further than ever before, delivering services to the most rural communities in the world who have no other access to this healthcare. We will build sustainability by partnering with the public sector to strengthen health systems and support a shift to national ownership of reproductive healthcare and rights.

Strengthen private sector healthcare

We will connect private sector providers through sustainable, collaborative and integrated women’s referral networks, ensuring every client is only one contact away from a safe service. We will achieve financial sustainability in our centres, diversifying the services we provide and setting the bar for what quality client-centred care looks like.

Deliver client-centred sexual and reproductive healthcare

For over 45 years, MSI has been a pioneer in de-medicalising reproductive healthcare – trusting women, rather than providers, to make the choices that are right for them. We will continue to trust women, listen to our clients, expand choices, and ensure safe healthcare at scale.

Forge new partnerships to fund services

It costs around three cents per day to protect a young woman from an unintended pregnancy, giving her a chance to finish school or even saving her life. To ensure our services remain accessible, including to adolescents and low-income clients, we will build strong partnerships based on a shared vision for expanding reproductive choice to build a better, more equal world.

Partner with grassroots organisations and governments to remove barriers

We will work closely with local, national and global groups and coalitions to be an influential advocate for change. We will collaborate to remove the unnecessary legal, medical and regulatory restrictions that prevent access to timely and life-saving reproductive healthcare.

Transform our organisation to be client-centred and community-driven

We will listen, design with, and be fully responsive to our clients and providers, transforming our use of digital technologies to deliver world-class, client-centred care. We will shift decision making away from our London support office, harnessing local and national connections to guide our organisation and deliver community-driven programmes.

Want to know how we got here?

Our MSI 2030 strategy was designed in consultation with our organisation and sector. Our priorities and direction were decided based on evidence and insights from our programmes, our frontline providers, our partners and beyond.

We would like to take this opportunity to warmly thank our colleagues, partners and researchers who contributed to this strategy and brought MSI 2030 into existence.
