We have been working in Ethiopia for over three decades, delivering family planning and reproductive health services to millions of low income and under-served women and men across the country.
We work closely with the Government of Ethiopia and other partners to help reduce maternal mortality rates by increasing access to quality sexual and reproductive health services.
MSI Ethiopia provides long-acting and permanent methods through 6 mobile outreach teams that target hard to reach areas in the country.
We provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services through a network of centres, socially franchised private clinics, and outreach teams. Our outreach teams target hard to reach clients in the three most populated regions of Ethiopia. Services are fully subsidised and offered free to clients who would not otherwise be able to afford them.
The services we provide across Ethiopia include general medical consultation, short, long-acting and permanent methods of contraception, family planning counselling, pre-and post-natal care, child health checks, free condom provision, voluntary testing and counselling on HIV, and STI screening and treatment.
In 2020, our team in Ethiopia delivered family planning, safe abortion and maternal health services to approximately 990,000 clients.
In addition to this, MSI's Ethiopia programme operates a helpline that receives thousands of phone calls per month, many of which are young people aged 20-29 years old. They call seeking advice on contraception, safe abortion and other topics surrounding their sexual health.
Advertised as a family planning success story and model for other African countries, MSI Ethiopia, the Government of Ethiopia and other partners have dramatically increased the country’s contraceptive prevalence rate through co-ordinated and sustained efforts over several decades.
MSI's programme in Ethiopia is one of the Government's key partners in attaining its healthcare goals. Active in the country for almost 25 years, our clinical leadership in family planning and geographic footprint across the country have helped to increase support for, and access to, contraceptive methods in both the public and private sectors.
