Marie Stopes Nepal and its partner, Sunaulo Parivar Nepal (SPN), has been delivering family planning and safe abortion services to thousands of women across the country since 1994.
Using an advocacy-based approach, Marie Stopes Nepal is providing services to meet the needs of women, men and young populations across the country. Our teams are increasing awareness and understanding of contraception, particularly targeting the under-served, marginalised and hard-to-reach populations in Nepal.
In 2019, nearly 180,000 unsafe abortions were estimated to be prevented by the work our team carried out on the ground.
Our programme in Nepal is one of the leading providers of sexual and reproductive health services, performing more than 75% of all safe abortions. In 2019, nearly 180,000 unsafe abortions were estimated to be prevented by the work our team carried out on the ground.
In addition to providing excellent services to women across Nepal, we are also committed to supporting the Government of Nepal in its goal to reduce maternal mortality rates, as well as to increase the prevalence rate of the use of modern contraception.
We use diverse channels and ways of working to ensure that women across Nepal with a range of different living situations have accessible and affordable family planning services.
Marie Stopes Nepal began as a centre-based organisation. What originated as just a few centres has now extended to 36 centres within Nepal in 32 districts. Centres play a crucial role as a base for training and act as a vital logistics hub where our outreach teams and community-based distributors go to sterilise equipment and re-stock on clinical supplies.
For many people living in remote areas or urban slums, family planning is neither accessible nor affordable. Through our outreach, we offer family planning choices where health facilities are scarce or of poor quality. As it is very difficult for people in the remote mountain areas to visit the static centres, we take our services directly to them via mobile choice camps or outreach services.
We are working in close collaboration with the district health offices and local communities. Regardless of whether a client visits our static centres or the mobile choice camps, they receive the same quality services.
Marie Stopes Nepal launched an innovative project to work with newlywed couples, by offering a comprehensive package to help them plan their family before or shortly after their wedding.
With high rates of early marriage coupled with low rates of contraceptive use, many young couples begin their marriage ill-equipped to plan their families. As a result, they end up having unwanted and untimely pregnancies at young ages when they are not yet ready to be responsible parents.

The stigma surrounding sexual and reproductive health information and services among Nepal’s youth continues to be the main barrier in efforts to increase contraceptive uptake.
Marie Stopes Nepal is working hard to reach the urban and rural youth through a project called Rockets and Space. The project aims to increase availability and uptake of contraception and safe abortion services, and has so far been successful with almost two million young people receiving information through pop-up sessions, radio shows and Facebook.
