In 2016, Uganda’s contraceptive prevalence rate stood at only 26%, hindering the country’s social and economic development.

More than half of Uganda’s population is under 15 years old. Yet despite nearly universal awareness of contraception, the rate of unplanned pregnancy is high. Around a quarter of adolescent women aged 15-19 are either pregnant or have already given birth to their first child.

How we deliver services in Uganda

Marie Stopes UG is Uganda’s largest and most specialised sexual and reproductive healthcare organisation, providing a wide range of high quality, affordable, client-centered services. For over 30 years, we have provided services to millions of Ugandan women, men and young people.

Currently, Marie Stopes UG provides approximately 60% of all contraception in Uganda, and focuses on reaching the most under-served communities. These communities are predominantly young, living in poverty, and reside in hard-to-reach rural locations and urban slums.

We also support the government of Uganda on the development of policies and guidelines related to family planning and reproductive health services. Through our expertise and research we are able to provide technical assistance to national health strategies, which improve the lives of millions of women and young people in the country.

How we reach our clients

We deliver services through a range of channels, helping us to reach women in different settings.

  • Mobile outreach teams serve clients in remote, rural areas in every region of Uganda.
  • A network of clinics situated in urban areas offers a wide range of sexual and reproductive health and family planning services.
  • A network of blue star clinics that provide quality family services to urban and peri-urban communities through subsidized voucher schemes.
  • MSI Ladies. These are qualified midwives and nurses from the local community, who work from home or visit clients in their homes providing high-quality family planning services
  • A public sector strengthening channel through which public health workers are selected, trained and equipped to provide quality family planning services.
  • Social marketing, ensuring that people have the option to buy high-quality, sexual and reproductive healthcare products in a convenient location.
